AN AWARD-RICH AUTUMN FOR DUCA DI SALAPARUTA WINES

This fall has marked a season full of confirmations and gratifications for Duca di Salaparuta brand wines. All thanks to a rich new array of awards and medals which day after day have ratified the success of a product coming from a meld of great tradition, longtime viticulture experience and intense teamwork.

Let’s start from what’s up ahead, namely, the Italian Sommelier Foundation’s 2023 Bibenda Guide, which will surely include three of our wines. The three, all wines from the Florio Cellars, won a 5 Grappoli rating for excellence. They are: Duca Enrico 2018, Bianca di Valguarnera 2019 and Marsala Vergine Riserva (virgin reserve) 2008 – VR0308.

Always on the Florio front, Marsala Superiore Riserva Semisecco (superior semidry reserve) – SR2715 won the Silver Medal at the debut edition of the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles – Sweet&Fortified Wines Session. This is an important recognition above all for the foreign markets that are moving increasingly toward this product category.

Likewise, the Italian wine guide Vini Buoni d’Italia reserved a special place for our wines in the 2023 Italian Touring Club Guide devoted to native grape varieties, awarding no less than two crowns (one gold, the other green) to Duca Enrico 2018. They are: the CORONA ORO VINI BUONI D’ITALIA, which the Italian Touring Club Guide tasters confer upon excellent wines; and the CORONA VERDE VINI BUONI D’ITALIA 2023, given by guest commissions consisting of journalists, operators, sommeliers and wine lovers.

Duca Enrico 2018 is no doubt our champion medal-winning wine, for — with a total of 96 points out of 100it has a place of honor also in Doctor Wine’s 2023 Essential Guide to Italian Wines curated by Daniele Cernilli (one of Italy’s leading wine journalists). Similarly impressive, the innovative vision of the new Florio Marsala line won kudos with an excellent score of 96 out of 100 for MARSALA VERGINE RISERVA  (virgin reserve) – VR1898.

In the rankings of journalist/wine taster James Button of Decanter Magazine, it’s the whites KADOS 2021 and BIANCA DI VALGUARNERA 2019 that get a high score: the two beautifully nuanced and noble wines appear on the journalist’s list of 65 best Sicilian wines, specifically as premium wines in his prominent Sicily Report 2022.

Sicily is the focus of many foreign wine competitions, as in the case both of the FALSTAFF SICILIA TROPHY 2022 and the MUNDUS VINI SUMMER TASTING 2022. A reference point for the entire European wine market, German speaking countries in particular, the two Tasting Editorial Boards and Commissions are composed by world-class professional tasters who are major players on the international wine scene. At the Mundus Vini Tasting Duca products obtained important ratings, first and foremost Duca Enrico 2018, which won the Oro grande | ***Best of Show Sicilia*** prize; meanwhile Passo delle Mule 2020 and Lavico Etna Rosso 2020 each earned a gold medal.

The Falstaff Sicilia Trophy tastings were conducted by Othmar Kiem and Simon Staffler, two market journalists and opinion leaders. Both gave high marks to the Duca di Salaparuta and Florio wines: Duca Enrico 2018 got 94 points and Bianca di Valguarnera 2019 a total of 92 points. With Florio, Marsala Vergine Riserva (virgin reserve) DOC VR1003 got 94 points, taking second place in the selection of Sicilian whites. Lastly, Marsala Vergine Riserva (virgin reserve) DOC VR0308 received 93 points.

These are truly top-notch results that confirm once again our wines’ vocation for excellence.
