ILLVA SARONNO HOLDING’S CORPORATE SUSTAINABILITY, STEP BY STEP

In September 2021, Illva Saronno Holding embarked upon a path all about integrating sustainability into the corporate strategies. In July 2022, on the occasion of the Global Marketing Event it officially presented the Illva Sustainability Path, a project led by the group’s own Sustainability Team and by Process Factory consultants with the aim of conducting the ILLVA Group toward a future of sustainable growth.

The starting point consisted of the elimination of plastic from promotional packs, so reducing use of the material by more than 7 tons per year. Then came the introduction of a new water cycle for the washing of bottles, so enabling the company to reuse the water over and over and thus reduce the waste of it. In addition to these two key measures, throughout the production plant halogen light bulbs were replaced with LED ones, resulting in about a 60% energy saving.

Other major step on this sustainability path: conversion of the entire heating system from a diesel fuel one to the methane gas type. In terms of Co2 reduction, the estimate for 2022 is approximately 279,000 kg. Moreover, during the course of 2021 a photovoltaic system was installed on the roof; up until now it has allowed the ILLVA Group to save almost 700,000 kg of Co2 .

Accomplishments since June 2022

Getting things done

The Illva Sustainability Path is composed of short-, medium- and long-term objectives.

On June 30, 2022 participants in the ILLVA Group Shareholders Meeting approved the Planning and Management Model and the Ethical Code.
On July 21, 2022 an audit of corporate waste management took place with the aim of evaluating the current situation at the company. The ultimate goal is to define the requisite initiatives for ensuring the most ecofriendly disposal of waste and assessing circular economy opportunities so as to make the cycle as efficient as possible.
In September 2022 a first definition phase of the perimeter of study for the analyses of Carbon Footprint – Water Footprint – Life Cycle Assessment got underway. In performing these analyses, the data of the ILLVA Saronno branch companies (U.S.A., U.K. and Benelux) will be taken into consideration.

The current goal is to begin – in November 2022 – the significance analysis on all six categories of greenhouse effect gas emissions taken into account by the ISO 14064 regulation. The aim is to establish which significance categories will be reported on by mid 2023.

Category 1: direct GHG emission and discharge

Analysis of CO2 emission within confines of the organization

Category 2: indirect GHG emission from imported energy

Analysis of CO2 emission beyond confines of the organization, to produce electrical energy purchased by the organization

Category 3: indirect GHG emission from transport

Analysis of CO2 emission from transport with vehicles not belonging to the company

Category 4: indirect GHG emission deriving from products used by the organization

Analysis of CO2 emission from products used by the organization

Category 5: indirect GHG emission from products made by the organization

Analysis of CO2 emission from products made by the organization

Category 6: indirect GHG emission from other sources

To this end, in January 2023 the collection of all 2022 data will begin, in order to do a comparative analysis w.r.t. the 2021 data and thus define the initiatives geared toward  future emission reduction.

In November 2022 questionnaires relative to corporate climate will be distributed for the purpose of verifying the level of organizational wellness of Illva Saronno Holding personnel.

During the course of 2023 an ENERGY DIAGNOSIS will be carried out through a series of analyses regarding energy consumption management of the three legal entities comprising the ILLVA Group (ILLVA Saronno, DDS, Disaronno Ingredients). In doing so, the same method will be used for all three so as to prepare a consumption reduction plan for the upcoming years; as well as to support other ongoing analyses, e.g. the Carbon Footprint one.

Along with the reduction plan and the mid-term objectives, the data which emerge from the analyses will be included in the ILLVA Sustainability Report to be published in mid 2023.

Step after step, the ILLVA sustainability path keeps emerging with greater clarity and concreteness. It’s a path full of goals to reach which the company will share with all relative interlocutors in view of having Illva Saronno evolve toward true and lasting environmental sustainability.
